"Kenn George Authors HB 614"

Austin - Today, in a public bill signing, Governor Bush signed into law a bill that will "save Texas counties thousands of dollars and enable a more cost effective government" said Dallas County Judge Lee Jackson. HB 614 enables counties to accept gifts, donations, or bequests from foundations, corporations or private citizens. State Representative Kenn S. George (Dallas-108), the author of the bill, said "I was delighted to be asked to carry this bill for all the County Commissioners, Sheriff's Departments, and District Attorney's just to name a few that needed this legislation. I am glad the Governor signed it into law today. The fact that it was my first bill to pass it makes it even more significant."

Commissioner Jim Jackson, also attending the signing ceremony, commented that "previously, if an individual wished to help us out with a donation to our county welfare children's fund, for example, we couldn't accept. This will go a long way to providing the needed services without increasing taxes," said Commissioner Jackson. The bill was sponsored in the Senate by Dallas Senator John Carona. "We truly appreciate Representative George's and Senator Carona's efforts on this important bill for Dallas County and all the citizens of Texas," concluded Judge Jackson.

Representative George recently completed his freshman term and represents District 108, which included parts of Dallas, Lakewood, Lake Highlands and the Park Cities.
