House Speaker Pete Laney announced today that he has appointed Representative Kenn George, R-Dallas, to serve as a member of the House Committee on Business and Industry, Pensions and Investments and the Committee on Rules and Resolutions.
"Most of the work in the legislature is done in committees where members spend many long hours hearing testimony and studying bills," Speaker Laney said. "I look forward to working with Representative George as the committees in the House begin to consider all the issues we will debate this session."
The committee process allows House members to closely study legislation before sending it to the full House for a vote. The committee system also encourages citizen participation in the legislative process through testimony on bills and direct contact with lawmakers as decision are made that affect the future of our state.
The 9-member Committee on Business and Industry has jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to industry, manufacturing, business transactions, the protection of consumers and has oversight over the Texas Workers' Compensation Commission and the Texas Workers' Compensation Research Center.
The 9-member Committee on Pensions and Investments has jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to benefits and participation in a public retirement system. It also has oversight authority over several state agencies, including the Boards of Trustees of the Teacher Retirement System and The Employees Retirement System.
The 11-member Committee on Rules and Resolutions has jurisdiction over the House rules and all congratulatory and memorial resolutions.
